Daytona Review

There is no place like Daytona. Every place in life has a different meaning to different people. Home means comfort. Church means finding our true purpose in life. And everyone has a place where they feel they are meant to be at. The place we belong. And for me, Daytona is that place. The place where I belong.

Greg Biffle won his first pole of the year this past weekend, and he led the field to green. While he did lead laps, the first ironically wasn’t one. Edwards did that. Edwards, Biffle, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, and Brad Keslowski all spent most of the night up front, with each taking turns leading. But Keslowski led the most, leading 115 of 160 laps. But leading the most laps doesn’t guarantee a win.

Daytona is known to have big wrecks, usually in the later part of the race. On lap 90, the first ‘big one’ happened. Jamie McMurray, who had run near the front most of the night, got loose running near the outside wall, and slid down the track into his teammate Kyle Larson. The two collided, but ironically they didn’t fly into the pack. But as McMurray recovered from his near wreck experience, Jimmie Johnson pounded into his back bumper, turning him up the track. From there on out chaos ensued. Cars collided with each other again and again, and at one point Brain Scott’s car was up on top of Kevin Harvick’s hood. In all, 22 cars were collected, many of which didn’t return to the race.

After this, drivers decided it was go time. Drivers who had been content to run at the back of the pack now battled to the front, and drivers who had run up front found themselves fighting desperately to maintain position. Brad Keslowski continued to lead, but he was desperately fending off challenges from Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, and a few others.

Then, on lap 148, another wreck occurred. Tony Stewart, who was running 6th in his last Daytona start, suddenly lost control and spun sideways, right in front of Casey Mears and Carl Edwards. It wasn’t a giant wreck, but it took Edwards and Stewart out of contention. Stewart said he got loose and over corrected, but many experienced analysts and viewers believed a tire blew on Stewart’s car. He isn’t the type to over-correct like that.

The final ten laps where now under way. Brad Keslowski and Kyle Busch were running side by side, desperately trying to claim the lead. But neither could shake the other for a long period of time, until Carl Edwards got loose and wrecked, taking the race into overtime.

And on this restart, Keslowski managed to get ahead of Busch.Blocking desperately, Brad took the white flag, and continued to block. But he now had both Busch brothers behind  him. Both made darts at him. Then coming off turn four, Kurt was ready for on last try for the lead. But Joey Logano went low, and sent Busch spinning, sending him from 3rd to 23rd.

Keslowski won the race, the 100th for Team Penske. I am not a Brad fan, but I do admire his skill, holding off the Busch brothers the way he did. He is a little over aggressive and brash at times, but then again, I like Tony Stewart, so I can put up with that.

I can not, however, put up with the continued stupidity of Joey Logano. And neither can Kurt Busch, who was angry with Logano after the race for the last lap spin. “I don’t know. Logano races people like that. That’s why he’ll never win a championship. He keeps p——  people off like that he’s never going to win, you know? Its just stupid. Stupidity,” said Kurt. Crew chief Tony Gibson had similar thoughts. “Stupid is as stupid does!!!” #22 tweeted the crew chief. This is yet another incident of Logano being an idiot on the track. Team Penske owner Roger Penske defended Logano after the race, but if you ask me, he’s been around racing long enough to know his driver is a lunatic. Just saying. If Logona keeps doing this, I’m going to loose my mind. And yes, he once again assumed that ridiculous, arrogant innocent look.

Sorry if I got a little angry there. Talking about Joey makes me mad. Anyway, it was an exciting race, it had a winner who proved his kills once again, and I was able to attend. All-in-all a good combination.

note: Despite wrecking late, Tony Stewart still gained enough points that he is now in the top-30 in points. Smoke has risen.
