The Sunflower State. Nice name. Very peaceful. Kansas Motor Speedway. Also a nice name. But not peaceful. Fast. That’s what it sounds like. Speed. And last year, this was where the feud between Matt Kenseth and Joey Logano started.
Kansas isn’t an old track. It has had a variety of winners, and the winningest driver in track history is Jeff Gordon. Well, you might have noticed, he’s retired. So he won’t be winning. Gordon’s teammate Jimmie Johnson has won here three times, so he is a decent pick. Johnson’s teammates Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are both winless here. Shocking, considering how many races they have run here. Chase Elliot is the last Hendrick driver, but he has been here in the Sprint Cup Series. But he has been lightning fast in his no. 24, so he is a good candidate.
Stewart-Hass Racing is pretty good here. Kevin Harvick has only won here once, but he has been the runner up in the past 2 Spring races. Kurt Busch is not as good, and he has never won here. Danica Patrick’s stats don’t look very impressive, but she has run very well here in the past. Tony Stewart has won here multiple times, and his team seems much better than last year. He may be a candidate for the win.
This is the one track where Joe Gibbs Racing is not at all impressive. Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards have never won here, and Kyle has wrecked here many times. Denny Hamlin has won here once, and he tends to run decent. Matt Kenseth has won here two times, but his most recent race here didn’t go well. He was knocked out of the lead by Joey Logano late in the race, a move which prompted Kenseth to wreck Logano out of the Chase two races later. Not a good memory coming into this weekend.
Both Brad Keslowski and Joey Logano have won here, but two of their three wins were achieved through… unique circumstances. Brad used fuel milage to win the 2010 Spring race, and Joey wrecked Matt Kenseth to win last year. Joey won the 2014 Fall race fair and square (I didn’t know that was possible with him). I don’t see either driver winning this weekend.
Now for the big question: who wins this weekend? Well, for the first time in a while, Joe Gibbs Racing doesn’t seem like the team to beat. I think that Chase Elliot will get his first career win here. He has been lightning fast at the intermediate tracks this year, and he has shown excellent skills over the past few weeks. So go 24!
