Folds Of Honor Quik Trip 500

Just as people were getting over the buzz of Joey Logano’s Daytona 500 win, Nascar was back at the track, this time at Atlanta Motor Speedway. And as a sign that he hasn’t slowed down, Joey claimed the pole for the Folds Of Honor QuikTrip 500.

The green flag was delayed about twenty minutes because the track had to be dried, but there were no further interruptions to the race. However, when the race started there was a vast amount of fog and a few drops of rain in the air.

The race was quiet for the first several laps, with Joey Logano leading the way. Due to mis-timed inspection, several big drivers failed to run a qualifying lap and had to start at the rear of the field. However, two of them drove straight to the front and stayed there. Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson both started in the upper thirties-low forties, but shot to the front like rockets. They left Logano in their dust and it became clear they would dominate the rest of the race.

Throughout the race minor cautions came out for little spins, blown engines, shredded tires, or debris, but there were no serious wrecks until the end of the event. As the final hundred or so laps rolled around drivers began to push a little harder, and that caused some trouble. On a late restart several drivers were running very close together, when Denny Hamlin in the no. 11 got loose and spun. He slid into the pack and slammed Ryan Newman, who hit Jamie McMurray. Jamie slid up the track and clipped the back bumper of Jeff Gordon, who screeched down the track and careened into the inside wall. Somehow Jeff managed to find a section of the concrete wall which wasn’t protected by a SAFER barrier. Gordon was visibly frustrated by this fact.

After the caution to clean up this mess, the race resumed. It quickly became clear that unless something crazy happened it would be either Kevin Harvick or Jimmie Johnson in victory lane. The two fought desperately for the lead when another wreck interrupted the race. Greg Biffle got loose and spun, taking half the pack with him. Tony Stewart, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and many others were damaged in the melee.

The race resumed not long after, and thanks to various cautions, the race ended with a twelve lap shootout. Johnson started first with Dale Earnhardt Jr. on his outside in second and Kevin Harvick behind him in third. When the green flag waved Jr. made a desperate charge on the outside, but Johnson was too strong on the inside. Johnson left Kevin and Jr. to fight for second while he pulled away. Harvick cleared Jr. and gave chase, but had only a few laps to work with. Try as he might Kevin simply couldn’t close the gap on Jimmie, and Johnson drove to his first victory of the season and his fifth at Atlanta.
