Pocono Preview

Ah, Pocono. The Tricky Triangle. Without a doubt one of the oddest tracks on the Cup circuit, this 2.5 mile scalene triangle is a tough one to figure out. But in the past two races, fuel milage has been the determining factor, not speed.

Earlier this year Kurt Busch won his 3rd Pocono race, and with a backup crew chief. Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Danica Patrick all ran well to, so overall Stewart-Hass Racing is looking good coming to Pocono. And what better way to celebrate the announcement of an Xfinity Series team than a win? Stewart and Busch are the only of these four to have won here, but a win from Harvick seems inevitable.

Hendrick Motorsports needs a win. With just two win this year, and with two drivers out of the Chase right now, a win is desperately needed. Jeff Gordon has 6 wins here, the most of any driver, and he’s in the no. 88, which finished second here earlier this year, and won both races here in 2014. Jimmie Johnson has won here, but he is still not at the top of his game. Kasey Kahne is on the outside of the Chase looking in, and needs a win desperately. Chase Elliot is currently well inside the chase on points, but a win would be nice. He dominated here earlier this year, so look out for the 24.

Roush-Fenway Racing is licking it’s chops. Trevor Bayne and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. have been performing very well, and both are just outside the chase. Can they capitalize at Pocono? Well, it will just depend on how the race plays out. They could run at the back all day and win on fuel milage. Or vice versa. Dominate, and lose because of fuel milage. As long as they can avoid making mistakes, they can stay in chase contention.

Chip Ganassi Racing is jumping for joy. After a wild finish last week, both Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson find themselves in the Chase with a mere 6 races till the cutoff race in Richmond. Both drivers have some of their best tracks coming up, Pocono among them. A win would put all points problems out of their minds. Still, a decent finish will work, and both are good at getting those at Pocono.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Matt Kenseth won this race last year, but only because teammate Kyle Busch ran out of fuel on the last lap. Denny Hamlin was second in that race. All the JGR drivers have a win here, except Kyle Busch. Busch nearly got it last year, and he still is trying to get said win. Could it come this weekend? Maybe. Carl Edwards, Busch, Kenseth, and Hamlin are all good picks this weekend.

So who will win? Well, I think that Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Larson, and Chase Elliot are all good picks. With Stewart and Gordon you get experience, and with Larson and Elliot you get the pure desire to finally win a race. I think one of these four will take the victory.
