Brickyard 400 Preview

Indianapolis Motor Speedway. One of the most historic tracks in the world, this 2.5 mile track is a symbol in almost every major car racing series. This is one of the few tracks where one win will make your name historic.

Indy favors no one, and it has had some random winners in the past. But Nascar has one driver who has always been it’s master. And he’s coming out of retirement to sub for his old teammate. Jeff Gordon will race in this year’s Brickyard 400. He has five wins here, the most recent of which came in 2014. And behind the wheel of the 88 car, Gordon looks to make a solid return to the circuit.

But his teammates are stout as well. Jimmie Johnson has 4 wins here, and needs a good race. Kasey Kahne has had many spectacular runs here, but he has yet to win here. And rookie Chase Elliot has excelled on big tracks, and would love to win his first race here. So Hendrick Motorsports seems a prime candidate for a win this weekend.

Joe Gibbs Racing is not to be taken lightly either. Kyle Busch won this race last year, and all his teammates were near the front with him. Gibbs Racing and affiliate team Furniture Row Racing would love to mark race 3 of the four big races off their list (Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600, Brickyard 400, and Southern 500). This is the next on the list.

But Stewart-Hass Racing is also looking good. Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch continue to finish consistently, Danica Patrick is gaining speed, and Tony Stewart has proven once more what the phrase ‘Smoke will rise’ means. Patrick and Busch have never won here, but Harvick has. And Stewart has won here twice, and would love to win at his home track in his final season. Watch out for SHR.

Team Penske isn’t particularly outstanding at Indy. Joey Logano has a second place finish here, and that’s all there is to say. Still, anything could happen.

Teammates Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson both find themselves battling to make the Chase, and both can virtually secure a spot with a win this weekend. McMurray won this race in 2010, and Larson has and average finish of 8th here. Watch out for the Chip Ganassi Racing boys.

Richard Childress Racing continues go have a good year. Both Ryan Newman and Austin Dillon are in the Chase and have a decent buffer over the cut line. The team’s odd man out is Paul Menard. Guess where Menard’s lone Cup win came? Right here, after a desperate battle with Jeff Gordon. Newman also has a win here, which ironically was his last one. All three would love a win, but the question is do they have the speed to get there.

So who wins? Well, with all the hectic battling for the Chase spots, I have no person who stands out in particular. But I think the experienced drivers will finish well. Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart stand out to me. With 7 Brickyard wins between them, both really have nothing to lose this weekend. So look for Smoke or Wonderboy to be in victory lane.
