Every sport has an athlete, team, or whatever you call it that pretty much everyone likes. The person is considered nice, they race or play clean, and they don’t lose they’re cool. But usually that person is either an underdog or just can’t catch a break. Also, there is almost always one race in a given year that one driver completely dominates. Wins the pole, leads almost every lap, and wins. And once in a while, someone who is the fan favorite and known to be snake bit does the impossible. They have the total domination day. That’s what happened this past weekend.
Martin Truex Jr. won the pole, lead 392 of 400 laps, and won the race. All race long, people waited for something to go wrong for Truex. Something always does. A tire blows. His pit crew messes up. He has a bad restart late in the race. But not this time.
Truex broke just about every record for the Coke 600. He lead for the most laps: 392 (The previous record was 335)! He lead for the most miles in any Nascar race in history: 588! That’s insane! He was passed just once under regular racing conditions, and he passed the Jimmie Johnson right back in the next corners! Jimmie Johnson!
I can’t really put into words how dominate Truex was. There is no race to recap. No one was a match for Martin. He was briefly challenged once or twice, but he drove away from those challenges. The only time he wasn’t leading was during green flag pit stop cycles.
While he dominated the race, pretty much everyone was just wandering what would go wrong. Like I said, something almost always goes wrong for Martin. But despite Kyle Busch hitting the wall late and Ryan Blaney blowing a tire in the final laps, Truex was not robbed of his well earned victory.
He had an amazing race, he finished it out well, and he was greeted in victory lane by a thrilled pit crew and a very emotional Sherry Pollex (His longtime girlfriend). He was congratulated by several drivers as he drove to victory lane. Can’t have a much better night than that. After a performance like that, I’m left wandering how many more times Truex will win this year.
