Coca-Cola 600 Preview

The Coca-Cola 600. Nascar’s biggest endurance test. 600 miles of racing, without any pause. The day of the Coke 600 is the one of the greatest in racing. The Indianapolis 500, the Coca-Cola 600, and some F1 race, who’s title escapes me at the moment, are all held on the same day. That’s pretty cool.

Last year Carl Edwards won the year’s longest race because he managed to make a fuel gamble work. This year, him and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates probably won’t have to depend on fuel milage to win this race. All four Gibbs Racing drivers have won and punched their ticket into the Chase, so all four can race as hard as they want until the Chase. And what better trophy to bring home than the one that takes the longest to earn? Also, don’t forget Martin Truex Jr., who’s team Furniture Row Racing has a technical alliance with Gibbs Racing. Truex has been fast this year, and last year he led 131 laps and finished 5th. He could win this weekend.

However, the Gibbs driver will have to deal with Penske Racing’s Joey Logano and Brad Keslowski. These two drivers have each won at Charlotte at least once, but ironically, neither has won the 600. I would hate to see that change.

One team that I can’t ignore this weekend is Chip Ganassi Racing. Jamie McMurray has won here more than once, and he won the All-Star Race here in 2014. Kyle Larson won the Sprint Showdown earlier this week, and he almost won the All-Star race. Both drivers should be watched.

Don’t forget Stewart-Hass Racing. Kevin Harvick has won this race multiple times, and he is almost always in the top-five here. Teammate Kurt Busch led 118 laps here last year, in route to a 10th place finish. Tony Stewart and Danica Patrick are uncertain here. Both have had good races at Charlotte, but both have also had bad races. Not sure what to expect from them.

Never rule out Hendrick Motorsports. Jimmie Johnson has won this race many times, and so has teammate Kasey Kahne. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished this race in 3rd last year, and rookie Chase Elliot has been outstanding at 1.5 mile tracks this year. Watch them.

All that said, who will win? I think Elliot and Larson are good choices. Both have had plenty of track time this past week in preparation for this race, and both ran very well. But don’t count out Kyle Busch of Gibbs Racing. He has never won at Charlotte, and he want’s to check this track off his list. Let’s go racing for 600 miles.
