Richmond Preview

Richmond has always been known for it’s night racing, but last year, due to a rain delay, it was run during the day. This must have inspired the Nascar leaders, because this weekend’s race is scheduled to be run during the day, which should prove interesting. Not to mention the new low downforce rules package.

The unique thing about Richmond is that it rarely favors one driver in particular. Kyle Busch is the only driver that has ever consistently dominated this track, but he hasn’t won here in four years. On top of this factor, drivers have never before planned to race here bby day, so this weekend’s race could turn out rather random.

Last year’s day race winner was Kurt Busch. He and teammate Kevin Harvick finished 1-2, and they had spent most of the day there. However, like I said earlier, teams had been expecting a night race, so the fact that Kurt dominated may have been random.

I don’t personally know what to expect this weekend, by I’m guessing that we will see the Joe Gibbs Racing drivers up front. All four have won here before, and most have won here recently. Add that to their recent domination, and a victory doesn’t seem unlikely.

There is on team which I definitely think should be watched: Chip Ganassi Racing. Teammates Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson both have had speed here in the past, and last Spring McMurray had a car which was capable off outrunning the leaders. So they may be worth watching.

After 2014, Team Penske seemed to be the team to beat at Richmond, but both Brad Keslowski and Joey Logano failed to win there in 2015. Both have performed poorly this year, so I don’t see either winning this weekend.

I don’t really know who to pick this weekend. As I said, no driver flat out dominates Richmond, and with it being a day race with a new rules package, it could be anyone’s race. If I must make a pick, I think Kyle Busch is the best one. He has the most wins here among active drivers, and he is the fastest driver this year. Still, I could very easily be wrong. Only one way to find out though. Let’s go racing, short track style!
