Martinsville Preview

Last Fall, Martinsville was a race full of surprises. Matt Kenseth extracted revenge on Joey Logano that fans were dreaming of. Jeff Gordon won his final career race at his most successful track. And Kyle Busch was quietly building his way toward a championship.

Now Nascar returns after it’s first off week, and fans and drivers alike are hungry for some racing. And what better place to pick up at than Nascar’s smallest and oldest track? Martinsville is a classic half-mile oval, and it’s been here since the beginning.

Jeff Gordon was always the man to pick at Martinsville, but now that he has retired, teammate Jimmie Johnson is the one to beat. Johnson has won here 8 times, and he would love a 9th. However, he hasn’t been up to scratch here in recent races. I believe the winner will be someone else. Chase Elliot, Gordon’s replacement, has been driving like a furture champion over the past couple weeks, and he’s only getting better. A win seems likely, and soon.  Or maybe teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. could win it. He’s done so before, and he usually runs well here. Kasey Kahne, the final Hendrick Motorsports driver, isn’t someone I’d bet on.

The Joe Gibbs boys are worth keeping an eye on. Denny Hamlin leads the group with 5 wins here, including one last Spring, where he beat Brad Keslowski in an epic duel. Matt Kenseth is also one to watch. He has led several laps here in recent years, but a win has eluded him. Kyle Busch has yet to win here, but he is consistently good, and he is a master at most short tracks. Carl Edwards is the one JGR driver I am worried about. He has never won here, and he has just one top-five finish here in his whole career.

Another team to watch is Team Penske. Both Brad Keslowski and Joey Logano are very good at Martinsville, but neither has won here. Why? The answers simple: they both drive like idiots. No driver ever cuts them slack anymore, mainly because Joey and Brad are the dirtiest racers in Nascar. I don’t see either winning, because neither has any friends on the track.

This is one of the few tracks where Kevin Harvick doesn’t dominate. He’s only won here once, in 2011. He’s still decent though. Teammate Kurt Busch won the Spring 2014 race, but his stats at Martinsville aren’t impressive. Believe it or not, Danica Patrick may be the best Stewart-Hass Racing driver at Martinsville. Last year she was one of the fastest driver on the track, and she finished 7th. She has a new crew chief this year, but she still seems capable of running well here.

On last driver that I should mention is Jamie McMurray. Last year he was the fastest car late in the Fall race, and he nearly snagged his first victory since 2013. He seems to run well at Martinsville, and he would love nothing more than to get a win.

So now comes the big question: who will win? That’s a hard one, but I’ve got an idea of who will run well. I would look for Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, and Denny Halmin to be the front runners late. But Denny or Matt will win. Logano will probably end up in the wall. Also, I’d keep an eye on Chase Elliot and Danica Patrick. Both may run surprisingly well.
