Atlanta Preview

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m still trying to wrap my head around last weekend’s finish. But it is already time to start thinking about week two. Atlanta. One of the fastest tracks on the circuit.

Last year Nascar tested a new rules package, one involving low-downforce. Both drivers and fans alike loved it. And now, it will make it’s 2016 debut, as the primary rules package this year.

Last year, Carl Edwards was the best driver with the low downforce package, with an average finish of 2.5 in the 2 races it was run in. After winning the Darlington race, he begged for Nascar to use the package in the 2015 Chase. While that didn’t happen, Edward’s dream is now coming true. And he is a good pick to win this weekend.

He won’t be without challengers. Teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch each ran well with this package, and both would be glad to get a win this weekend.

The Team Penske drivers are also very skilled in this rules package. While neither Joey Logano or Brad Keslowski had won with this package, both performed well with it. Look for the two of them to run near the front.

Surprisingly, neither Hendrick Motorsports nor Stewart-Hass Racing performed well with this rules package. They weren’t bad, but they weren’t their usual dominate selves. However, there is one driver I think this package may help.

The low downforce package makes it so drivers have to actually use car control, not cruise control. (Pun intended)  Danica Patrick, who has had some struggles finding speed on intermediate tracks, may find this package more to her liking. She is one of the best people at keeping her car under control, so if she can apply that to this package, she may be a force to be reckoned with.

There is another driver who merits watching in this package. Aric Almirola. Aric has been making significant gains toward winning, and he was one of the most consistent drivers to race with the low-downforce package. He may be someone to watch this weekend.

I think that’s enough facts for now. Let’s get down to the ultimate question: who will win this weekend? Normally when we come to Atlanta, I would pick Kevin Harvick or Jimmie Johnson. But not this time. My money is on Carl Edwards. Carl loves the new package, and I’m sure him and his no. 19 Arris team are putting in extra hours getting ready for this weekend. One other small prediction, I think Patrick will finish in the top ten. Her highest career finish (6th), came here at Atlanta, and it came while racing Carl Edwards.
