In one day, the Nascar season will officially be underway. 40 drivers will take to the track, all trying to add their name to the exclusive list of Daytona 500 winners. Thanks to the draft, almost anyone can win. So the ultimate question is: who will win?
When it comes to Daytona, there is rarely one driver in particular who is a favorite. But there is one driver in particular who excels at Daytona. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Just a note for readers, I am not in fact a Dale Jr. fan, so don’t think my picks are influenced by favoritism. As of late, Earnhardt has been the man to beat at Daytona. He has won two of the last four races here, and finished in the top-two 4 straight years in the 500. So he obviously has something figured out here.
However, he has company. Many other skilled drivers are in the field. Jimmie Johnson has won two 500s, so he is a good pick. Another solid driver is Matt Kenseth, who also has two 500 wins.
But let’s not forget the drivers who have yet to win a 500. Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, and Denny Hamlin are all good candidates. All three of these teammates are decent at Daytona. Hamlin won the Sprint Unlimited a week ago. Kyle won one of the Duels on Thursday. And their other teammate, Kenseth, won one of the front row starting spots. Edwards would rather not be the only Joe Gibbs racing driver to leave Daytona without a win.
A couple other drivers who have yet to win a 500 are Kurt Busch and Martin Truex Jr. Kurt has excelled at Daytona for years. He has been the 2nd place finisher more than once. But he has yet to claim the big prize. Truex is coming off of a breakout season in 2015, and would love nothing more than to start off 2016 with a win in the 500. Both drivers want the win badly.
But let’s not forget the young guns. Chase Elliot, who is taking over the historic no. 24 car for Jeff Gordon, won the pole for his first 500. What better way to start off your career than with a win in the biggest race of the season. Ryan Blaney, Elliot’s fellow rookie of the year contender, would also love to start of his career with a 500 win. Not an uncommon thing if you in the no. 21 Wood Brothers car.
So without any more naming past events, who will win the present battle? Who will win the 58th Daytona 500? Well, like I said earlier, it’s anyone’s race at Daytona. So I have a special prediction system. I choose five possible winners, and one underdog winner.
1: Dale Earnhardt Jr. His speed at Daytona is amazing.
2: Chase Elliot. Maybe he should be called an underdog, but I think he will quickly be a champion.
3: Kurt Busch: It’s about time that Kurt got a win at Daytona.
4: Trevor Bayne. Bayne is very good at Daytona, and he has already won the 500. (2011)
5: Kyle Busch. Like his brother, it is about time he won his first 500.
Underdog: Danica Patrick. I may seem to pick Patrick a lot, but there are good reasons. She has excellent car control, and is more than capable of out racing the top-racers. (Ask Jimmie Johnson about 2014, Talladega)
These are my picks. I love the 500 more than any race, so I hope I predicted right.
