For more than a decade Homestead-Miami Speedway has been the sight of the final race on the Nascar Sprint Cup Series circuit. For more than a decade, a driver leaves Miami with his life changed forever.
As the Nascar came to Miami, four drivers knew that they had a shot to win the Sprint Cup Championship. For Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr., it was a chance to win their first championship, and to show that despite the tradgedies they had faced recently, they were still winners. For Kevin Harvick, it was the chance to win his second championship in a row. And for Jeff Gordon, it was the chance to go out on top, and win his fifth career championship.
The race was delayed for about an hour due to rain, but it was only a brief delay. When the green flag waved, alll four of the contenders surged into the top-five.
For the first 70 or so laps, the championship hopefuls all ran in the top-five. However, gradually, two of them fell out of the top-ten. Truex Jr. and Gordon both had ill-handling cars, and they both drifted back in the running order.
Busch and Harvick remained in the hunt for the win. Both were fast, and each was determined to capitalize on their amazing season. Lap after lap, pit stop after pit stop, the two drivers drove their cars to the limit. Most of the time, Busch was in front of Harvick. But Kevin was never to far from him.
As the laps wound down, Busch was third, and Harvick was fourth. Nascar rules state that the highest finisher amoung the championship four is the champion. So at the time Busch was the champion. However, in these races, there is almost always a twist at the end.
The twist came in the form of a water bottle and a sliver of sheet metal on the track. This caused race officials to throw a caution for debris on the race track. Every driver came to pit road, and every driver took four tires.
Busch was now second, and Harvick fourth. When the green flag waved, Kyle drove his car deep into turn one, and surged past race leader Brad Keslowski. In less than a lap, Harvick had driven into second. But he had just ten laps to catch Kyle.
After nine long months of racing, the season came down to this. Two drivers, seperated by less than a second, driving like there was no tomorrow. One having bounced back from a broken leg and foot, one trying to prove that despite finishing second 11 times, he was still the best on the track. As the white flag waved, the gap between the two was still a second. And when the final checkered flag of the season waved, Kyle Busch was the one who took it.
Kyle Busch was officially the 2015 Nascar Sprint Cup Series Champion. After missing the first eleven races of the season, he had come back, won five races, and won the championship. When he arrived in victory lane, he was greeted by his wife Samantha, and his six month old son Brexton. As he hoisted the championshp trophy over his head, there was nothing but excitment and joy written on his face.
So ended the 2015 Nascar Sprint Cup Series season.
