Martinsville Review

Martinsville. One of the two smallest tracks on the Cup circuit. The oldest track in Nascar’s history that is still in use. And a long time fan favorite. The small and tight design of the track causes tight races and sometimes big wrecks. And it also causes even the most calm drivers to lose their cool.

Joey Logano, who has won the past three races started up front, and spent most of the race there. However, he was never alone. Throughout the race, various drivers took their turn up front. Kurt Busch, Brad Keslowski, Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick, and Jeff Gordon were the best of these challengers.

Remember what I said about crashes? Well, there were more than a dozen cautions throughout the race, most of which were the result of crashes. And remember what I said about tempers? Well, there were several drivers who got angry, but two incidents in particular stand out.

Early in the race, David Gilliland hit Danica Patrick and drove her into the outside wall. Well, Danica is known to be a feisty driver, and she didn’t change that now. Danica came back on track later in the race, and she slammed into David, damaging his car and destroying what was left of her’s. As major as this incident was, it wasn’t the biggest of the day.

Joey Logano and Brad Keslowski are teammates, and the two of them ran together up front for most of the second half of the race. However, on a restart with about 100 laps left, Brad accidentally wrecked himself, Matt Kenseth, and fellow Chase contender Kurt Busch. It took all three out of contention for the win, but Kenseth’s team managed to repair his car and get him back on the track. In the mean time, Logano continued to dominate the race.

Now, two weeks ago, late in the race at Kansas, Joey Logano, who had nothing to gain at the time, wrecked Matt Kenseth to win the race. Kenseth was visibly frustrated, as it took him out of championship contention. Also, the week after that, Logano nearly wrecked Kenseth as they entered pit road. And now, Logano and his teammate had once again taken Kenseth out of a race. But this time, Logano had everything to lose. And Kenseth had nothing to lose.

So, when Kenseth returned to the track with 55 laps to go, I think he had a plan on his mind. As Joey lapped him, Matt suddenly drove straight into the back of Logano, smashing him into the wall, crippling his car, and causing him to lose his almost guaranteed victory. And as of now, he is dead last in the standings, and out of the final round of the Chase. It is the revenge of Matt Kenseth. And everyone, the fans, the drivers, probably even some of the crews, loved seeing Logano hit the wall. In fact, as Matt was wrecking Joey, fans were jumping up and down, screaming with excitement.

Due to Logano being taken out of the race, all of the fastest drivers were no longer in contention for the win. This left Jeff Gordon in the lead, with only 50 laps remaining. And Gordon, who is still in the Chase, is the master of Martinsville.

As they restarted the race, Gordon jumped to the front, and drove like mad to try to pull away from the rest of the field. But an unexpected new challenger appeared. Jamie McMurray, an already eliminated Chase driver, was chasing Jeff, and it was clear the Jamie was faster. However, more was at stake for Jeff than Jamie. If Jeff won this race, not only would he get his first win of the year, he would be guaranteed a spot in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, in his final season.

Gordon maintained his narrow advantage over McMurray for about forty laps, when suddenly, a caution flew. Gordon restarted with McMurray on his outside, and teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. behind him. McMurray drove his heart out trying to pass Jeff, and even tried to bump him in the final corner. However, Jeff would not be denied.

Jeff Gordon won his 93 career race, his ninth at Martinsville, and in his last start at the track. And, he secured his spot in the final race at Homestead. As he celebrated his victory, it was clear that no win had ever meant so much to him. After all, he was practically dancing as he celebrated. Without a doubt, this was the best race of the 2015 season thus far. Unless your name is Joey Logano.
