Irwin Tools Night Race Review

Bristol is one of the best races to watch, and the night race is the best of any. And sure enough the stands were packed full of fans that were looking for an exciting race. Well, it didn’t disappoint.

Denny Hamlin started on the pole, but Kyle Busch quickly passed him at the start. Kyle went on to lead a race high 192 laps. However, he was not destined to stay there for the whole race.

This race was rather strange, because front runners were constantly being penalized, or having pit road problems. Kevin Harvick, who ran near the front a lot, was penalized twice for speeding on pit road. Ouch. And Jeff Gordon, running a throwback rainbow warrior paint scheme, had to pit late in the race for a vibration, while in the top-five. Weird.

Despite these problems, there were no major wrecks during the race. The biggest wreck came when Brian Vickers was spun while racing teammate Clint Bowyer. He took some significant damage from the wreck, while Bowyer and everyone else remained unscathed.

Many drivers took turns leading throughout the race, but it doesn’t matter if your leading during the middle of the race. What matters, is who leads the last lap! Well, the last restart occurred well before the end of the race. Joey Logano managed to pull away from all the other drivers and he remained unchallenged for a while.

But suddenly, with 50 laps to go, Kevin Harvick suddenly appeared in Logano’s rear view mirror. Kevin is pretty much the last driver you want in your mirror, especially at the end of the race. And it became clear Harvick was faster than Logano. It seemed Harvick would blow by him, until they began to encounter lapped traffic.

Logano struggled through as quickly as he could, and Harvick tried to follow. At one point Harvick nearly rammed Logano’s bumper. But by the time they were clear of the traffic, Logano had extended his lead, and there were only a few laps remaining. Kevin drove like a mad man trying to catch up, but he was not able to reach Logano’s back bumper.

Joey won his second straight Bristol night race, his third race of the year, his second win in the last three races, and his second win at Bristol. And Harvick got his tenth second place finish of the year, and his twelfth top-two finish of the year. Wow.
