Right now ten drivers are secure in the Chase, one has the wins but needs a few more points for security, and five are in on points as of now. However, those five are not remotely secure.
Kyle Busch is the driver who needs points to be secure. He is in the top thirty in points and needs to stay there in order to make the Chase. He only has to
survive for three races. Good news is, Richmond and Bristol are two of the three, and he has won multiple races at both tracks.
If he makes the Chase, that leaves five spots to fill and three races to do so. Right now those five spots are filled by Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Paul Menard, and Clint Bowyer.
The top four among them are more than a race win worth of points ahead of 17th. Bowyer, on the other hand, is only twenty points ahead of 17th place Aric Almirola. So he is by no means secure.
Now, should a driver behind Bowyer win a race, he would be out of the Chase. So things are getting a little tight. And should multiple new drivers win, other driver’s such as Newman and Menard would be eliminated.
So right about now things are getting rather tight in the standings. The question is will anyone new win a race? Well, it’s always possible. Especially at Bristol. Right now all we can do is watch and wait.
