Fast track. New drag package. Never even had a restart with this drag package. And now your going to run a whole race with this package? Bring it on.
Matt Kenseth started from the pole, with teammate Denny Hamlin on his outside. As the green flag waved Kenseth surged out front, where he would spend most of the race. However, as the field went through turn one for the first time, the first wreck occurred. David Ragan got loose and spun onto the apron. And they hadn’t even completed one lap.
This was the first of several times that drivers spun because of their cars being lose. Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, and others all suffered a similar fate. Ironically, drivers rarely hit anything.
With only four races left until the Chase began, several drivers who are on the edge of the Chase bubble were carefully watched. Clint Bowyer, Jeff Gordon, Aric Almirola, and Paul Menard, were the main drivers being watched. It seemed that they were all doing solid, running in the top fifteen, when suddenly, one of them wrecked.
Clint Bowyer, who was running very well at the time, was hit up the track. He pounded the outside wall, then slid down the track and backed into the inside wall. His team scrambled to repair the car, but by the time he got back on track, he was more than thirty laps down.
With that happening, he is now dead last in the Chase, and should someone who is behind him in the points win, he would be out of the Chase. And since Aric Almirola ended up in the top fifteen this past weekend, Aric is in a position where he can pass Clint on points.
As the race progressed, two drivers became the clear leaders. Matt Kenseth and Austin Dillon. Kenseth spent most of the race up front, while Dillon was constantly working his way to the front, occasionally leading.
On the final restart Kenseth jumped ahead of all drivers, while Dillon was still trying to get through traffic. Kenseth continued to pull away from second place Kevin Harvick, while Dillon struggled through traffic. In the end, Dillon only managed to get to fourth.
Matt Kenseth won his third race of the year, his third at Michigan, and his tenth with Joe Gibbs racing. He continued the dominance Gibbs Racing has had as of late. Right now all four Joe Gibbs drivers are in the Chase, and it seems like it will stay that way.
