Cheez-It 355 at the Glen Review

It’s so good to be back. Nothing is better than blogging about what you love. I’ve been gone awhile, and during that time, historic things have happened. But let’s focus on this past weekend’s event. A.J. Allmendinger, this race’s defending winner, sat on the pole, and was the class of the field for the first twenty laps.

However, after that the race was a crazy scramble. Leaders came and went, with various strategies appearing. Multiple cautions flew over the course of the day, but no major wrecks occurred. Watkins Glen is a strange place compared to your average track, because with it taking so long to navigate this 2.45 mile road course, a simple spin rarely causes a caution.

That said, several times throughout the race drivers spun, but cautions were occurred less than normal. However, that’s not to say there were no cautions. Greg Biffle caused the first, due to a slide through the grass and debris coming from it.

Tempers also flared over the course of the day, mainly between Justin Allgier and Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie bumped Justin into a slow spin through turn one, and Allgier was so mad, he yelled, “He (Johnson) better hope I don’t catch up to him.” Justin never did catch Jimmie, but he seemed angry enough to carry out the threat.

Events like those previously stated were common throughout the day, But as the laps wound down, it became a strategy race. All of the leaders were close on fuel, and it became a who can make it race. Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth led the race, but their fuel was dangerously low. On the other hand, Joey Logano and Kyle Busch, right behind them, had a tad bit more fuel.

Logano pushed insanely hard, while Kyle hung back, waiting to see how things panned out. Joey made quick work of Kenseth, and Kyle quickly followed. Harvick however, was not so easily dealt with. Lap after lap Logano pressured Kevin, but Kevin refused to lose.

At the same time, everyone was waiting for Harvick to sputter to a stop. But he just kept chugging along. As they took the white flag Logano was on him, and Busch was well behind them. As the drivers went through turn one a car spun, and Joey nearly wrecked, leaving Harvick well ahead of him. Harvick slowed to conserve fuel, and Logano slowly made up ground. Suddenly, Kevin’s engine sputtered, short of fuel, in the final two turns. Joey passed Harvick, but Kevin wasn’t finished yet. He plowed into Joey’s bumper, trying to knock him out of the way. But Logano kept his car under control and crossed the line first, and Kyle managed to slip by Harvick before they crossed the line. It was Logano’s second win of the season, and his first on a road course. Oh and he won the Xfinity race, giving him the weekend sweep. Solid.
