Quaker State 400 Preview

Kentucky Motor Speedway. The newest track on the Cup schedule. And the one track that Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart all haven’t won at. Then again, this is only the fifth time the Cup Series will have raced here. Kentucky is 1.5 miles, and in its short history it hasn’t had many exciting finishes. But, that can always change.

Brad Keslowski has the most wins here, two, but the most successful driver at Kentucky in and of itself is Kyle Busch. The very first year that the Truck, Xfinity, and Cup Series all raced here, he won all three races. Wow. Busch is without a doubt the favorite to win here. And Keslowski is pretty good to, although I’d rather see him in the garage than victory lane. Just saying…

Matt Kenseth is the only driver aside from this pair to have won here in the Cup Series. He won the 2013 race, which was rain delayed to the next day. Rain is in the forecast for this weekend, so that may be a good sign for Matt. He does have a habit of winning rain-delayed races.

While no one else has won here, there are several strong candidates. Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., and Jimmie Johnson have all been wicked fast this year, so keep an eye on that quartet. They’re all very fast. And all four have been solid at the 1.5 mile tracks this year.

Earlier I mentioned Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon. The two of them are the legends of their era, and neither has won at Kentucky. And both have said they want to. Can they win in this race? Well, anything is possible, especially in racing. And this is the last time Jeff will try.

There are also several young guns in the field who should be noted for this race. Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson both are drivers to watch. Both have raced here several times in other series, and each is looking for his first win. What better place for young drivers to win than at the Cup Series’ youngest track?

All this said, who will win this weekend? Well, Kyle Busch is the best bet, with all his success. But I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Austin Dillon. After all his success here in the Xfinity Series, I think he is a good pick. And he is probably still pumped up after his freaky wreck last weekend. And, there is a new rules package in place this weekend, so he is on more even footing with the big drivers.
