Nascar has fast tracks, and Nascar has short tracks. Nascar has tracks where drivers run high, and it has tracks where drivers run low. Rarely is there a track that is short, fast, and you run the high lane. But there is one place like that. Richmond. Richmond is the track were many a great race has been run. Chase positions are decided in the fall race here. And In the spring race, one driver dominated for years.
For four straight years Kyle Busch won the Spring race at Richmond: the Toyota Owners 400. Last year that streak was broken. This year, Busch won’t be here. But his teammates will. No track says Joe Gibbs Racing more than Richmond. For years JGR has dominated this track, its drivers winning multiple races year after year. And even though Kyle won’t be here this year, Denny Hamlin, Carl Edwards, and Matt Kenseth will. This trio has shown unbelievable speed here, and now that they are united as teammates, watch out.
But, they will not be alone. Stewart-Hass RAcing drivers Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart, and Danica Patrick may be a problem for them. Kurt, Kevin, and Tony have all won here. Stewart says this is his favorite track, and why shouldn’t it be. He claimed his first win here in 1999, and has had amazing success since. And Busch and Harvick are very impressive to. Danica is still learning, but with the way she’s run as of late, she may just surprise people.
Last year Joey Logano and Brad Keslowski won both races at Richmond, but they have slacked off over the past few weeks. Can they rebound this weekend? Well, as long as they don’t wreck each other they probably can (they crashed together this past weekend at Bristol).
Last among the favorite teams is Hendrick Motorsports. Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are the teams main weapons at Bristol, and they both are carrying good momentum into Richmond. The other to HMS drivers, Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne, are not exactly the best at this place. But, they may surprise.
There are several other drivers in the field, but there is one who may have what it takes to out run the favorites. Jamie McMurray has been fast at Richmond for the past couple years, and why stop now? He has maintained speed all year, and he is only seeming to get better.
Roush-Fenway Racing has struggled all year, but last weekend they had a solid finish coming in the form of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Ricky finished fourth, RFRs best finish in ages. Could that be a sign of a return? Well, hate to be a drag, but Bristol is Stenhouse Jr.’s only good track. That may be the source of his success.
All this said, who is the biggest threat for the win? Well, I can’t point out one person in particular, but there are two teams that stand out. Stewart-Hass Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing. Both have incredible momentum and speed coming into this race, and each has at least two drivers who have won here before. Watch these two on Saturday night.
