When Danica first showed competitive spirit in racing, it was when she wrecked her sister to win a race. Now, twenty years later, she is competing in the Nascar Sprint Cup Series. And this past weekend, she raced into history books, again. She now has set the record for the most top-ten finishes ever for a woman.
Danica first became known when racing in the Indy Car Series. She was good, having solid finishes, and a win. But she was not going to stay there. In 2010 she started in what is now the Nascar Xfinity Series. Then, when starting at Las Vegas in 2011, she finished fourth, a record for a woman in Nascar.
Then, in 2012, she ran ten Cup races for Stewart-Hass Racing. She was not overly impressive, but she did have a solid run in the fall Phoenix race. In addition, she ran the full Xfinity Series schedule that year. She finished tenth. While she didn’t cause an uproar, she was pretty good. After all, she came from an open wheel back ground. That transition isn’t easy.
Then came a big step. She moved full-time into the Sprint Cup Series no. 10 Stewart-Hass Racing Chevrolet. In her first start of 2013 she won the pole, led multiple laps, and had a chance to win the race. She finished eighth. While she only had a few good runs the rest of the year, she was decent.
Then came 2014. She started rather slow, but suddenly, she had speed. She ran an unbelievable race at Kansas, finishing seventh. For the rest of the year she had little bursts of speed, claiming a sixth place finish at Atlanta, her best ever in the Cup Series.
And now, in 2015, she is doing better than ever. She has been consistent, with two top-ten finishes in the first eight races. Eighth at Martinsville and ninth at Bristol this past weekend. On top of it all, she is currently in thirteenth in points. In the Chase. She has been staying near the cutoff line for the Chase all year, and she is only gaining speed. She is fast, and on track to claiming her first win, and possibly even a Chase spot.
Since she first race, she has been fast. She has great mentors, great cars, and a great team. Without a doubt she is the best woman ever to race in Nascar, and with the path she is on, she could very well be the first woman in history to win a Sprint Cup race. Only time will tell, but she is in the fast lane, and she isn’t slowing down.
